10 Ways to Save Energy at Home This Fall

Fall is the time of year where we send our kids back to school and our minds start to think about holidays like Halloween, Thanksgiving, and even Christmas. 1. Install a programmable thermostat. This allows you to set it once and forget about it.  As an example you can set it for 76 degrees when you are away from the house during the day and 73 degrees for when you are at home.
2. Change you’re A/C filter monthly. A clogged filter is a restriction which lowers the efficiency of your system.
3. Open all of your interior doors. This allows air to flow more freely around your house and helps to eliminate hot spots. It will also keep your home at a more consistent temperature.
4. Keep your freezer full. This actually helps keep it cold so the freezer will run less. If needed you can even freeze gallon jugs of water for an easy, inexpensive item to take up space.
5. Always wash your clothes in cold water. This can save you 40 cents per load.
6. Check for air leaks around your windows and doors and seal them as needed. And make sure your fireplace damper is closed…..when you aren’t using it of course.
7. Install a hot water heater wrap. This insulates your hot water heater so the heat stays in the water longer, which means the heater runs less.
8. Replace all of your light bulbs with CFL or LED bulbs. This will save you big money over time.
9. Install a radiant barrier in your attic. This radiates the sun’s heat on your roof back out of your house before it enters your attic.
